Quotes of the week - Sent from Elder Colton Mouritsen

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the "absolutes" I've learned on my mission. Some come from one-liner quotes, others are single principles. You will probably recognize some. Here's a few:

"There is no comfort in a growing zone, but no growing in a comfort zone."
"You are as happy as you are obedient."
"The Atonement of Jesus Christ is real."
"Our potential is incomprehensible."
"Submitting to the Father's will, obedience, and righteous actions breed spiritual and even temporal/professional education and knowledge."
"Callings are seldom convenient...they come first."
"It's a choice to be happy and to get along."
"Sacrifice brings forth the blessings of Heaven."
“The opportunity of a lifetime can be missed by not seizing it in the lifetime of the opportunity."
"We are saved by grace, after all we can do."
"Attitude is everything."
"The Lord's hands are in the details."
"The church is true."

February 15-21, 2011: What's a punch or two to the head?

Dear Family,

This week has been awesome. The zone had three more baptisms which was awesome! That brings the total for the month of February to 9 with three more scheduled for next week. We have definitely been blessed.

Tuesday this week we had a specialized zone training. That is where we combine with two other zones in the mission (Phoenix and Glendale) and get trained by President Beck, Sister Beck, and the assistants. We also have a skills training. We then have lunch together and afterwards the zones split up and have their own personal zone meetings. The focus of ours was "A Successful Missionary." We had talks on "How to become a successful missionary/What determines a successful missionary?" and also on developing Christ-like attributes. It went ok but I'm always kicking myself since it can always go better. That night we had the Book of Mormon class and afterwards taught Heather Dewar and Tiffany Schmidt, two recent converts. They wanted to know more about the spirit world and what goes on there. I had no idea what we were going to talk about. While thinking about the topic, Elder Buttars, another missionary we live with, was sent a story from his parents that was written by a Stake President from Boise about a vision he had of the spirit world. I sent a copy to you. It was pretty cool and we ended up having an awesome lesson. Afterwards, Heather asked if we could give her a blessing because of the stress that was going on in her life. We did and she said she felt comforted. The faithfulness and drive of the recent converts is unbelievable to me. Tiffany has already received her Patriarchal Blessing, and both of them are already inviting their friends to learn about the church because they know just how much happiness it has brought them. It is so cool!

Wednesday we went to both District Meetings. Afterwards, we taught Roy Kelleners who is a new investigator we found last Saturday who is a foreign exchange student from the Netherlands. He is legit! Right after the lesson he said he really wants to come to church, FHE, and also the Book of Mormon class. He came to church and got along really well with all the members. He fits in really well and we hope that he will continue progressing and become a powerful member of the church. Later that night, we had a lesson with Vanessa and Dominique. They are twins who are NUTS! haha They are very random, somewhat awkward, and one of them is severely dislexic and has a hard time paying attention. We taught them a great lesson with several members there, but afterwards Dominique asked the members to leave and us to stay because she had something she wanted to tell us. We said ok, and after everyone left she went on to tell us that she had already been baptized twice and didn't want to be baptized again. We asked more questions as to why and reiterated the lesson we taught about the priesthood. She finally told us the real reason. She laid her face in her pillow and mumbled under her breath that she just has her own beliefs. I asked well then what are those beliefs? She didn't want to tell us because she thought it would offend us. I assured her that we had heard them all and if anything could offend us at this point we were probably doing things wrong. She went on to say that she believes that Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father are the same person. Ahhh, haha it was like a switch just flipped in my mind and I went from calm, quiet, smooth Elder Mouritsen, to Samuel the Lamanite calling the Nephites to repentance on top of the wall! haha I started giving "evidence" from the Bible as to how Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father are two separate beings. How about his baptism? How about praying in the garden? How about telling the Father to "forgive them, for they know not what they do?" How about the vision Stephen saw of Christ sitting on the right hand of the Father in Acts 7? The only thing she could say was, "well it's just really hard to explain!" We went on to reteach the message of the restoration from the life of the Savior, emphasizing the power of the Priesthood and the apostasy, to the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. (haha, one thing led to another, and we have a prophet on the earth today!) She didn't have much to say. But after, she made sure that we were still going to come back and she is all of a sudden going to do all that she can to get work off so that she can come to church with us on Sunday. It was intense.

Thursday, we went on a brief exchange with a Spanish companionship because we were going to pass one of our investigators over to them. Well the investigator wasn't home but there was a less active member in the apartment next door who came out and talked to us. We quickly learned that she has two young daughters, and seven other "kids" living in the small apartment. By "kids" I mean full grown SNAKES! You KNOW how I love snakes... She showed them to us. They have several Boa Constrictors, a chameleon, a corn snake, a 6 foot bull python, and a NINE foot albino python. Oh, don't worry, they sleep with the nine footer in their bed with them. I can't tell you how freaked out I was. I didn't even want to invite them back to church... haha just kiddin but it was nuts.

Friday was a pretty "sick" day. haha We had a great experience this week with the "Windows of Heaven." In our prior weekly planning session, we planned a window of heaven for Friday at 2:30, at the 23rd Ave and Dunlap intersection. Our appointment we had scheduled at 1:30 cancelled, so we decided to go to the window of heaven an hour early and see if anybody was there. As we sat in the truck, while it was a bit chilly outside (around 50 degrees), we didn't want to begin contacting yet because we thought that it wouldn't be necessary until at least a half hour before the allotted time. Suddenly, a young adult looking Hispanic kid walked down the sidewalk and sat at the bus stop in front of us. I had a very distinct impression that I needed to talk to him. I shrugged it off for a few seconds, but the impression didn't leave. Right then I said to Elder Birch that we needed to talk to that kid. So we got out of the truck and Birch went and stood on the corner so nobody else would slip passed, while I sat next to the young man. His name was Jose, and it turns out he is an assistant at Devry University for our Ward Mission Leader and said that he would love us to come by a few days later. I gave him a Book of Mormon. We chatted for several more minutes and got to know each other a bit more. We then shook hands and went on our way. As I looked back at him several times because his bus had not come, I noticed that he had already opened the Book of Mormon and was reading it for the next several minutes. He is awesome!

Friday NIGHT, was a different story. We had an investigator named Anthony come to church last week who lives in a halfway house on 11th Ave and Mountain View rd. GHETTO. haha Of course, he set the lesson up with us at 8:00 p.m. on Friday night. We didn't think anything of it. We got to the appointment, and it turns out he lives in a halfway house and has been in prison for 4 and a half years. He's 24. We went to the halfway house manager and he said that Anthony wasn't home and wouldn't be back till around nine. Well, that's after our curfew, so we headed back to the truck. When we got there, two ladies started asking us questions through a fence so we went over to talk to them. We ended up talking all about the Easter Pageant and how they really wanted to go. As we were talking, we noticed a group of scary looking guys developing on the other side of the street across from us. We knew that this part of town had a reputation for iffy business so we started to get uneasy. We finished our conversation with the two ladies and headed back to the truck. The guys were sitting in lawn chairs smokin' who knows what but I noticed that the house they were in front of was a place that a recent convert from the YSA was staying in and nobody had been able to get in contact with him forever. I asked them if they knew anything about them and immediately one of the guys was very nice and wanted to help us out in finding him. There were two of them sitting in the chairs and they immediately walked over to us. We noticed that one of them was an average height, skinny black guy and the other was an extremely drunk, bulky, Native-American guy. The black guy was super nice and was trying to help us out but the Indian guy got right up in our faces, called us demons while using many vulgar adjectives to describe who we were. He grabbed me, grabbed Elder Birch, and pushed us both us against the truck. We were just like “what the heck?’ He reeked of alcohol. He would get up about an inch from our faces and tell us he was going to kill us. He was also doing this all the while the black guy was trying to explain to me where the recent convert was staying for the night. I was hardly paying attention to him though because I was just waiting for the Indian guy to attack us. After awhile the Indian opened the truck and tried to push me inside. I slammed the door, looked at him, and told him that we were not yet going to be leaving. He looked at me, and after a few seconds passed, told me he was going to kill me because I was a demon, and decked me right in the head above the right ear. My head slammed back against the window of the truck. I was very taken back and hadn't really recognized what was going on when I looked back at him dancing like a boxer with his fists up, chanting over and over, "come on demon let's fight! Let's go!" "What...the crap?" is what I thought when he came at me again and hit me a second time in the exact same spot. By this time, the black guy got between us and told him that he needed to stop. He told him over and over again that we were men of God and he really needed to quit. I opened my door, went to get in, looked back at the Indian and said, "Bro, you might regret what you just did." The Indian threw the black guy out of the way and by this time we were able to get inside our truck and luckily Elder Birch locked the doors because the Indian ran back, trying to unlock the door by using the handle, but noticed it wasn't open, and started punching the drivers side window to get inside. That happened to be my side! I started the car, slammed it in gear, and sped off. It was an interesting night and definitely one for the journal! Later that night, we decided to play a joke on the missionaries that live with us. I wrapped toilet paper around my head and put a drop of red food coloring on the spot that he hit me while Elder Birch told the story. I then walked out and they were like, "AHH! Oh my gosh! Are you kidding?!" haha It was funny to see their faces when I took it off.

Well, that's about it for the week! Our Stake President, President Hettinger, called us saying that he wanted us to teach an investigator in the family ward his family goes to. I guess the missionaries there offended them by not talking to them when they wanted to set up an appointment or something. Kinda sad, but cool for us! She is solid! We met with her on Sunday night and she already wants to be baptized. Pretty cool. President Hettinger hugged us afterwards and told us he is grateful for what we've done for his family, including his own son, who was off course for awhile.

I love you very much! Thanks for all you do. Also, thanks for the valentines! They were awesome!

Love,
Elder Colton Matthew Mouritsen
P.S. Ken Law (picture of him at his baptism) is a motocross racer and Saturday morning he got in an accident where he went over the handle bars and got ran over or something and landed in some rocks. He got life flighted to John C. Lincoln hospital which just happened to be in our area. He said he was in the worst pain of his life which is saying alot for him. He called us up and asked if we could come give him a blessing. He said that he didn't know if he would be at church on Sunday because of the severe swelling and bruising on his back. Sunday came, and he was there an hour early, telling us that he needs to keep the Sabbath day holy. With a crippled back, not able to walk properly, he paid his tithing, and stood up in Sacrament to have the ward sustain him to receive the Aaronic Priesthood. It was awesome. What a stud.

February 8-14, 2011: New companion is Elder Birch & Ken Law gets baptized

iBueno!

Great letter! Sounds like you all had a great week!

Yes, this week was transfer week. Transfer weeks always go SO slow! Kennington was transferred to the Glendale North Stake and is now serving in the Arrowhead Ranch Ward (one of the wealthiest in the mission) and the Union Hills YSA. Apparently the Arrowhead Ranch ward has had straight "0's" on the 5 Key Indicators for the past six months. That's quite bad. So he is going there to bring it all back up! My new companion is Elder Tom Hanks. Just kidding but he sounds EXACTLY like Tom Hanks. His name is Elder Kevin Birch from Meridian, ID. He has been out 17 months and a crazy thing was that he wasn't even a district leader before he was called to be a zone leader. He was pretty shocked when he got called. He hasn't really grasped the mentality yet and it may hit him when we get put in a situation where we have to report to the Stake Presidency or the mission in Zone Leader Council. He's great though and we have a great time teaching. It is very hard to take over a ward after a missionary gets transferred that they loved so much, especially when he was in this area for nearly 20 months. The people here absolutely adore Elder Kennington so that has been rough trying to fit back in. Elder Buttars and I each got new companions, so that brought two new ones into the apartment. Elder Campbell is with Buttars and Campbell is probably the most hilarious elder I've ever met. He reminds me of the chicken from the movie "Surf's Up." He doesn't act as stoned, but he's just as funny. We have good times. Elder Halligan was made a zone leader up in Prescott so it'll be fun to see him more frequently.

Ken Law was baptized on Saturday and it was great! It is literally a miracle that he has gotten to this point. I've witnessed an entire change of personality and attitude from him since the first time I met him. I straight up told him that too. I said, "Ken when I first met you I won't lie, I was terrified! Now that I've witnessed this 180 degree change the fear has all left." haha He laughed at that and always gives me grief because of it. He's a major dirt bike racer and wanted to go ride during the day before his baptism. He's nuts on a bike though and jumps like 80-100 foot gaps. He's snapped his wrist twice and his leg once and actually has metal rods in each of them. We thought it might not be a good idea for him to go riding right before his baptism. Satan would just have too much of an opportunity to halt his baptism. He got kinda freaked out by that comment and said that he ended up just getting everything all set up so that he could leave straight from the baptism. We assured him that the baptism of water has no meaning without the baptism of the spirit. He was freaked out by that too but that didn't stop him from riding all night. He said that he just felt like he was invincible because the Lord wouldn't let him die without having the second half of his baptism. Good attitude I guess... What was neat though, is the night before his baptism, he helped out a bunch of friends with some things and they offered him some free cigarettes, free drinks at the bar, his ex-girlfriend called wanting to hook up with him again, a buddy offered him weed, and then someone asked if he would get coffee with them. Now that's not that neat, but he recognized each of these experiences as temptations from the adversary to try to get him to stop from making such an important step in his life. He remembered that we had warned him that bells go off in hell when someone sets a date to be baptized and he found that to be true. I think this is true for everyone. Sometimes we think things are going so bad for us and we even want to give up at times but what we don't often realize is that Satan is trying to stop us from doing something possibly life changing. This was proven with the first vision. Joseph went in to the woods with a question, and obviously Satan knew just how miraculous the event that transpired was going to be. He tried to seize upon him and stop Joseph from having the experience. Our experiences today probably won't be so miraculous as seeing our Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ, but still amazing on our own personal levels. I guess what I'm getting at is at certain times when things seem to be going all wrong in my life, I tell myself that Satan is trying to hinder me from an experience I have yet to enjoy. Ken saw this in his life, but he also saw what Satan was trying to stop him from doing. Be baptized. We often times don't see what the end result is that he is trying to stop us from accomplishing but it takes faith to make it through to receive the experience!

We found some pretty solid investigators this week, including a guy by the name of Roy Kelleners. He's from the Netherlands and is going into computer programming at the Art Institute of Arizona. We knocked on his door and he was very earnest to learn more about our religion. As we taught him last night he agreed to everything we talked about and even had questions written down that he had from visiting mormon.org. It is amazing how the Lord guides us to those who will receive us. His questions couldn't be more elect. "What do mormons believe? What do mormons do? What would I have to do to become mormon? What does mormon mean?" It was sweet!

Saturday night was pretty eventful. We got a call from a missionary that there was a fire in our complex. So, of course, we all got our cameras and went running to find it! It turns out that somebody had gone through the complex and lit several dumpsters on fire and it was huge! I took some pictures and some video but it didn't do it justice. They just happened to be the dumpsters surrounding our complex as well... Hmmm... haha It was cool though. The fire department came and sprayed them out with their huge fire hoses. Haven't seen that before... Man, I tell ya, Phoenix is a crazy place.

I hope that all is going well for you! Love you lots! Don't forget to send some inspirational/motivational stories! I love them!

Have a good week!

Love,

Elder Mouritsen

February 1-7, 2011: Goodbye Kennington, Hello New Opportunity

Well Hey! I'm excited to see your mormon.org profile(s) soon! President Beck has felt inspired that each of the missionaries should create their own now. I'll be pondering what to put on mine, and also what picture to use. If you could send me those good pictures that Mike took that would be great!

Transfer news came today. After we got done talking to President Beck about our weekly numbers, he asked if he could speak to each of us privately. He spoke to Kennington first and told him that he was going to be transferred, training a new missionary, and flushing a new area (meaning going in as two brand new missionaries to that area). Then he spoke to me and told me I would be the new Senior Zone Leader in the Phoenix North Zone. I'm going to need that leadership/motivational material asap! It'll be great though. I'm excited about the missionary work part in the YSA but the whole zone leader responsibility kinda scares me. Still feel extremely inadequate and unprepared. I'm sure thankful for the Eliases in my life. Man, I have much to be thankful for. Total, there will be five new missionaries coming into our zone. Elder Nelson is still in my old area and his companion is going back home to Tremonton tomorrow. I told him to look out for the Jensen family and to tell them I love them. His name is Elder Douglas Deakin.

Yes this past week has been freezing. Luckily I've had the truck to take shelter from it and it has a great heater :). But, on Friday we had some misbehavior to correct, which always digs a hole in my heart. So, I was on exchanges in the Cactus View ward with a brand new missionary. It's especially sad when the disobedience is coming from a missionary who is a trainer, when all the trainee wants to do is be obedient. He told me EVERYTHING. The behavior was corrected to the extent that we know and the trainer feels that he has repented, which is great. The trainee is a little stud who has definitely fought his way to be on his mission and does all that he can to be exactly obedient and follow what the Lord would have him do. Needless to say, that day on exchanges was pretty dang cold. I put on my sweater, gloves, and suit jacket and tried to stay in the sunlight but it was still pretty chilly! Nothin’ to complain about though. No need for a coat, it shouldn't get cold anymore! Knock on wood...

Last Tuesday we had Zone Leader Council. We returned and reported on our numbers for the month of January and set new goals for the month of February. Hopefully February will be a good one for baptisms in our stake. We already had three this past weekend! The focus of the meeting was "Finding the Lord's Elect." Many scriptures were used including D&C 61:3 which talks about how moving too swiftly along the waters is not needful because there are many along the sides that are perishing in unbelief. It all comes back to having the Lord as our guide and letting him place us in situations and circumstances where we can find His elect.

One of our investigators, Ken Law, has been struggling badly with smoking. He wanted to be baptized on February 12th though and he was determined to get there. Saturday night we went with the ward to the temple. Many did endowments, others did baptisms, and then a group went to the visitor center and watched the Joseph Smith movie and walked around. Ken came with us. He is an extremely shy, small words, tell you how it is, kind of guy. He's pretty blunt with us when he doesn't think he can feel the spirit and what not. He said he enjoyed it though and then as we were leaving he asked us if he would still be able to be interviewed the following day for his baptism. We were shocked! Of course you can! haha He then asked us if he could get a Priesthood blessing to help him with the cravings. This was a huge step. When we got to church the next day he got all nervous and didn't want to have a blessing anymore but we did have the interview, and he passed! During fast and testimony meeting it was so cool to see the inspired members get up and bear their testimonies specifically about the power of priesthood blessings. It was a meeting definitely meant for Ken. Following our "Break the Fast" meal, he asked us if we could give him a blessing. We did and it was awesome. He is planning the entire program and personally asking each person to participate. What a stud! Oh and one other thing, he has eyes tattooed on the back of his head.

That is an awesome insight about what an Elias is. I never really heard of that. Only that a man named Elias restored the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Other than that I had no idea! That's awesome though. Thanks so much for the insight. (The “insight” Colt is referring to was sent to him in the weekly letter last week: “You said, 'God places people and experiences in our path (opportunities to succeed) to help us along the way.' SO TRUE!!!! Today in Gospel Doctrine we talked about John the Baptist. He is considered an Elias. Elias in the Bible Dictionary is referred to as a preparer and a restorer. He prepared the way for the Savior, who was the restorer. If Elias is a preparer, who are our own personal Eliases? Who was placed in our lives to prepare us for the Savior? Now, beyond those Eliases in our lives, are we taking advantage of that preparation to hopefully be an Elias in someone else’s life? Think back on your time in Phoenix so far. How many people would look to you as their own Elias? You prepared the way for them to then be restored by the Savior. It’s truly amazing to think about. But what if missionaries in your zone squandered the opportunity for success or the opportunity to be an Elias? As a ZL, are you in a position to be their Elias?”)

As to the girls athletics. I'll continue to pray that all will go well! Tell them I love them and just to "Come what may and love it!" Don't be nervous, be confident, but not cocky. But most of all...just have fun! If it's not fun anymore what reason do you have to be out there! Don't let criticism get you down. That's one thing I've been terrible at. I hate when people try to fix what I do when I've felt that it's right for me. I gotta be better at taking criticism.

Well other than that this week has been pretty slow, even though it went by fast. These next couple transfers could be pretty nuts! I'm excited to see who my new companion will be! Still very nervous though.

Know that I love you very much! Thanks for everything that you have done for me and continue to do for me.

Love,

Elder Mouritsen
